Apple is said to be working on two curved display iPhone models for the “second half of next year,” according to a source speaking to Bloomberg, with a likely released planned for the third quarter, and building better touchscreen sensors that introduce fine pressure sensitivity for later devices to be introduced after that.
The new iPhone for 2014 will come with 4.7 and 5.5 inch according to the report which means Apple will launch two different product. We have seen reports of Apple working on large screen iPhone earlier also. This is the first time we heard a firm information about the possible release date for said devices, from a source as generally reliable as Bloomberg.
The report also says that these devices will incorporate glass that curves at the edge, a potentially big break from Apple’s present iPhone design language. The company is said to also be experimenting with touchscreens that can detect different levels of pressure, but the technology may not make it into this first batch of devices, which Bloomberg’s source believes will debut in the third quarter of next year.
The sensor developments are potentially more interesting to those who find the current screen size of the iPhone adequate; true pressure sensitivity (currently, some crude extent of that is possible via the iPhone’s accelerometer) would make drawing and handwriting applications on the iPhone and iPad much, much better. Apple could sell the devices as professional-level artistic devices if it introduces those kinds of features, in addition to just making things better for everyday users who want to jot notes and doodle, for example, or perform minor photo touch-ups.
Curved displays have made a splash lately thanks to Samsung’s Galaxy Round and LG’s G Flex, but both devices are seen as somewhat experimental early-round efforts to show what flexible displays are capable of — no global release plans have been made for either phone. Apple’s plans sound less ambitious, meanwhile, merely curving the glass that sits on top; it’s similar to a rumor earlier this year suggesting that the company was working on a curved-glass smartwatch. Pressure sensitivity could be the bigger boon, a powerful new feature for gaming where a touchscreen typically offers limited input options. It’s an area of focus for Apple lately: iOS 7 includes new gaming hooks that will lead to full-fledged gaming controllers. (techzavvy)
